Supported processors
The Intel® Desktop Board D850MD supports a single Pentium® 4 processor with a system bus frequency of 400 MHz.

Warning: Processors not specifically listed by type and rated speed may have requirements that are not supported by the desktop board's design. Use of unsupported processors may result in improper operation, damage to the desktop board or processor, or reduced product life.

Board Revision Note: A small bar-coded label, similar to the diagram shown below, can be found on the component side of the desktop board. The numbers following the letters "AA" can help identify the type and version of your desktop board. The AA contains a 6 digit main number, and a 3 digit dash number (the 3 numbers following the "-").

The statement "...or later" refers to the dash number of the AA (the three numbers following the "-"). If this number is greater than the number listed in the table, the board supports the associated processor(s).

If your 6 digit main number is not listed in the table, contact your system manufacturer for processor support information.

System memory
Tested Memory
Memory testing has been performed under the following categories:

Advanced Tested Memory*
Intel® provides the advanced environmental test procedures, test software and necessary hardware to an independent test lab to perform advanced testing as requested by the memory vendors.

Memory tested by Computer Memory Test Labs (CMTL*).

Intel Internal Tested Memory
Intel has a limited amount of memory tested for the desktop board. These part numbers may not be readily available throughout the product life cycle.

System Memory Features
The 82850 MCH integrates two lock-stepped Direct Rambus banks, providing a processor-to-memory bandwidth up to 3.2 GB/sec. The Intel® Desktop Board D850MD and Intel® Desktop Board D850MV have four RIMM sockets (two sockets for each bank) and support the following memory features:

  • Single or double sided RIMM configurations
  • Maximum of 32 Direct Rambus devices per bank
  • Memory configurations from 128 MB (minimum) to 2 GB (maximum), using 128 Mbit or 256 Mbit technology PC600 or PC800 compliant RDRAM
  • Serial presence detect (SPD)-based configuration for optimal memory operation
  • Suspend to RAM support
  • ECC and non-ECC support
Note PC700 memory can be installed on Intel® Desktop Board D850MD and Intel Desktop Board D850MV but defaults to PC600-level performance.

Continuity RIMM Modules
All RIMM sockets must be populated to achieve continuity for termination at the Rambus interface. Continuity RIMMs (or "pass-through" modules) must be installed in the second RDRAM bank if memory is not installed. If any of the RIMM sockets are not populated, the computer will not complete the Power-On Self-Test (POST) and the BIOS beep codes will not be heard.

RDRAM Memory Configuration
When installing memory, note the following:

  • The four RIMM sockets are grouped into two banks:
    • Bank 0 (labeled on the board as RIMM1 and RIMM2)
    • Bank 1 (labeled on the board as RIMM3 and RIMM4)
  • Bank 0 must be populated first, ensuring that the RDRAM installed in RIMM1 and RIMM2 is identical in speed, size, and density. For example, the minimum system configuration would use two 64 MB RIMM modules of PC600 or PC800 RDRAM.
  • If the desired memory configuration has been achieved by populating Bank 0, then Bank 1 should be filled with two continuity RIMMs.
  • If memory is to be installed in Bank 1, the RIMM modules installed in RIMM3 and RIMM4 must be identical in size and density to each other and match the speed of the RIMM modules in Bank 0. The RIMM modules do not, however, need to match those in Bank 0 in size and density. For example, if Bank 0 has two 128 MB RIMMs of PC800 RDRAM, Bank 1 would require PC800 RDRAM also; however, any other supported RIMM modules such as 64 MB or 192 MB could be used.
  • If ECC functionality is required, all installed RIMM modules must be ECC compliant.

The following table gives examples of RDRAM component density for various RIMM modules. Component density (counts) can be identified on the RIMM label.

Supported Memory Configurations

Rambus Technology Capacity with 4 DRAM Components per RIMM Capacity with 6 DRAM Components per RIMM Capacity with 8 DRAM Components per RIMM Capacity with 12 DRAM Components per RIMM Capacity with 16 DRAM Components per RIMM

Desktop Board Specification Update
  • This document is an update to the specifications contained in the Intel® Desktop Board D850MD Technical Product Specification (Order Number A65145). It is intended for hardware system manufacturers and software developers of applications, operating systems, or tools. It contains specification changes, errata, specification clarifications, and documentation changes.
    • Specification Changes are modifications to the current published specifications. These changes will be incorporated in the next release of the specifications.
    • Errata are design defects or errors. Characterized errata may cause the Intel Desktop Board D850MD's behavior to deviate from published specifications. Hardware and software designed to be used with any given Printed Board Assembly (PBA) and BIOS revision level must assume that all errata documented for that PBA and BIOS revision are present on all desktop boards.
    • Specification Clarifications describe a specification in greater detail or further highlight a specification's impact to a complex design situation. These clarifications will be incorporated in the next release of the specifications.
    • Documentation Changes include typos, errors, or omissions from the current published specifications. These changes will be incorporated in the next release of the specifications.

This location contains the most current Specification Update. The revision number is indicated by the last two digits in its 'pdf' file name.
